Along the way to the original homesite of John and Mary Washington, great-grandparents.

Walkway leading to the original homesite of John and Mary Washington. In 1657 John Washington, the great-grandfather of George Washington built the original small house on the property he purchased in Virginia at Bridges Creek, about a mile from Washington's birthplace. The extensive tracts of land extended as far north as what is now called Mount Vernon. When he died he left George Washington's father Augustine Washington a portion of his acquired 8,500 acres and his surviving daughter the Mount Vernon land.
There's a small family cemetery where 32 family member's remains were located, including John and Mary Washington, Augustine Washington, George's father and George's half-brother.

George's father, Augustine Washington purchased additional land along the Potomac called Pope's Creek. Here in 1718 he built the first stage of the house Washington was born on February 22, 1732. Below is the Wakefield House built to replicate the typical "upper class" home built in the era of Washington.
Below is the actual foundation of the original house.

After a beautiful morning walking the grounds of Pope's Creek Plantation we went on in search of President's Monroe's birthplace.

And that was it for James Monroe's birthplace. There was a small museum that was closed.
So thanks again for visiting. Come back soon.
